Need a break from the all serious writing and reading you must do? Are you the kind of person who sees poetry in advertising and a well delivered political speech?
The human race has really only come a short distance in the history of the English language (I can’t speak for others, although I can speak passable French), yet we seem to be becoming more unintelligible over time if you consider texting and modern song lyrics. I wonder what superstar artists and lyricists like Al Jolson, Glenn Miller or Irving Berlin, or musical theatre writers Rodgers and Hammerstein would make of current hits. It’s not that they didn’t write or sing about sex, drugs or good times; they were just more subtle, mostly… Little Richard had to tone down Tutti Frutti and Bessie Smith’s Sugar in My Bowl made news long before Lady Gaga or Eminem got the idea.
Check out some fast fun every Thursday on Tumblr at popsonnet, where the cleverclogs blogger rewrites pop songs in Shakespearian verse – the riffs on Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Village People’s YMCA, Bon Jovi and Beyonce are fantastic and make me appreciate how poetic a turn of phrase can truly be.
